What is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a highly detailed, non-surgical procedure in which tiny impressions of pigment are deposited into the upper layer of the scalp using ultra-fine, medical-grade needles. Each micro-dot replicates a hair follicle, creating the appearance of a closely-shaved head of hair, a sharper hairline, or added density in thinning areas. The results are extremely realistic and, when done correctly, undetectable.

Is SMP just for men?

Not at all. SMP works just as well for women — and is one of the few non-surgical treatments that can effectively address female pattern thinning, diffuse hair loss, alopecia, and post-surgical scarring. Because women typically experience thinning across a wider area rather than full pattern baldness, the technique is adjusted to add density beneath the existing hair rather than create a defined hairline. SMP is also effective across all skin tones and all hair colors.

How many sessions will I need?

Most clients require 3 sessions to complete their treatment, though some cases — especially extensive scarring or full scalp work — may need a 4th. SMP is intentionally built up across multiple sessions because the scalp heals and absorbs pigment differently in each area, and layering in stages is what creates the natural, three-dimensional look. Sessions are typically spaced 10–28 days apart to allow the skin to fully heal and the pigment to settle before the next layer is applied. How long will each session take?

Each session generally lasts between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the size of the treatment area and the goals for that session. The first session is usually the longest because we're laying the foundation — designing your hairline, mixing the custom pigment, and creating the base layer. Subsequent sessions are typically shorter as we refine density, blend, and add depth. You'll be in a comfortable chair throughout, free to listen to music, watch something, or just relax.

Is the procedure painful?

Most clients describe the discomfort as minimal — significantly less than a traditional tattoo. The needles used for SMP are far finer than tattoo needles and only reach the upper dermal layer of the skin, so the sensation is more of a light, repetitive pinprick than a sharp pain. Some areas of the scalp can be slightly more sensitive than others, but the overwhelming majority of clients tolerate the procedure with no medication. We'll always check in with you throughout the session to make sure you're comfortable.

Will I need to take time off of work?

No. SMP is non-invasive and requires no real downtime. Most clients return to work either the same day or the next day. You can expect mild redness on the scalp for roughly 24–72 hours after each session, which fades quickly. The main aftercare guidelines are simple: avoid heavy sweating, swimming, saunas, and direct sun exposure for about 4–5 days after each session to let the pigment settle properly.

Are the results permanent?

SMP is considered a long-lasting, semi-permanent treatment. Once your full treatment is complete, results typically look fresh for 4 to 6 years before any noticeable fading occurs. Over time, the pigment will gradually lighten — not change color or turn an odd hue — at which point a quick single-session touch-up will restore everything to its original look. With proper aftercare and SPF protection, many clients go even longer between touch-ups.

Do I need to keep my hair short?

For clients getting a full hairline restoration or full scalp treatment, we recommend keeping the hair short — a buzz cut or close shave — for the most balanced, natural look. For clients getting a density treatment to address thinning hair, you can keep your hair at its current length; the pigment is placed underneath the existing hair to reduce the contrast between scalp and follicles, making the hair appear fuller. Your artist will help you choose the best style for your hair pattern during your consultation.

What if my hair is gray?

Gray hair is not a problem. We use a custom-mixed, gray-scale pigment that's diluted to blend seamlessly with your natural tone. When hair is kept short, even gray hair appears darker at the root because the follicle itself contains more pigment beneath the skin than the visible strand. This is why correctly-shaded SMP dots blend naturally into gray, white, or salt-and-pepper hair without looking out of place.

What if I had a hair transplant?

SMP is one of the most effective treatments available for camouflaging hair transplant scars — both linear FUT strip scars and the smaller dot scars from FUE procedures. By depositing pigment into and around the scar tissue, we replicate the surrounding follicle pattern and dramatically reduce the visibility of the scar. SMP can also be used to add density behind a transplant that didn't yield the fullness you were hoping for, giving the final result a more natural, complete look.
